There is a photograph of three girls—Carissa, Casey, Macy—arm in arm on the last day of sophomore year. After graduation, the photograph became the last time they were in the same place.
Carissa
Full scholarship out West. Secret since age nine: her father hit her mother every Friday. She met Derek—charming, then violent. Pills for the injuries became the only quiet thing.
The moment everything began to change: her three-year-old daughter toddled into the bathroom and found her mother on the floor. The child sat down, put her tiny hand on her mother’s face, and said: “Mama up.” Two words. The most important words anyone had ever spoken to her.
Six months into recovery, Carissa planted a garden. The first ripe tomato—small, imperfect, warm in her palm—she held it up to the light and cried. She had grown something alive.
Sometimes the reason to save yourself is smaller than you expected. Two feet tall with sticky fingers. God sends messages in many forms.
Casey
Ivy League dropout. Moved in with a man who called her “the one” on their first date.
The moment her change began was in a grocery store. She saw a woman her age reading a book in the coffee aisle, alone, smiling. Casey thought: I do not remember the last time I was alone and smiling. She left the cart and drove to a community college.
She enrolled in Introduction to Psychology. The professor opened the course by saying: “The most important thing you will learn in this room is that you are not broken. You are a pattern. And patterns can be changed.” Casey underlined those words three times.
Macy
Held captive two years. In therapy, her therapist asked: “Who were you before him?” Macy opened her mouth and nothing came out. Then she said: “I think I need to find out.”
She went running again. Ninety seconds before she stopped, hands on her knees, gasping. But she was outside. Her body belonged to her and only her. She went back the next morning.
You were not given your gifts so they could be stolen. Your intelligence, your heart—those are yours, placed by a God who intended them to be used.
