Coercive control seeks to take away liberty, autonomy, and sense of self. It includes isolation, monitoring, threats, guilt, gaslighting, and creating dependency.

Gaslighting—denying someone’s reality—creates chronic self-doubt. Brain imaging shows that chronic invalidation reduces activity in the insula, the brain region responsible for self-awareness. You literally lose touch with your own experience.

Cult-like environments use predictable techniques: controlling information, claiming divine authority, demanding purity, forced vulnerability used as leverage, and insider terminology that separates members from outsiders. Recognizing these techniques is the first step to escaping them.

God gave you a mind. A questioning, seeking, doubting, wondering mind. That mind is not the enemy of faith. It is faith’s partner.
