Marcus was twelve when he joined the youth group. The pastor said God had chosen Marcus for something special. He said this was between them and God. Marcus trusted God. So he trusted the pastor.
Spiritual authority creates a uniquely dangerous dynamic. The abuser represents God. The child does not just question the person—they question their entire faith.
Marcus told his grandmother. She stood up, walked to the phone, and called the police. Then she turned to him and said:
“That man does not speak for God. God is not in a locked room. God is right here, in this kitchen, with you and me.”
A year later, Marcus went back to church—different church. He sat in the back row with his grandmother’s hand on his arm. He did not sing. But slowly, the silence in the sanctuary began to heal the silence in the locked room.
When an authority figure abuses their spiritual position, it is not a failure of God. It is a failure of a human being. Your faith is not broken because someone used it as a weapon. Your faith is yours.
