Jordan was the kid everyone loved. Quarterback. Student council. Church youth group. His parents’ marriage was dissolving behind closed doors. The first drink was at a tailgate. The warmth that spread through his chest felt like the warmth that had left his house.

He kept a flask in his backpack. Teachers never checked. The all-American boy with the secret in his bag.

High-functioning addiction is the most overlooked form. Good grades and social success can mask substance use for years.

He blacked out at a party and woke in an ER. His mother was there—calm, the kind that comes after all the fear has been used up. She said: “This ends tonight. Not tomorrow. Tonight.” And Jordan, who had never heard his mother sound like steel, nodded.
